Math + Art

Mathematics: A Beautiful Elsewhere Exhibit
The Foundation Cartier, Paris
Oct. 21, 2011 – March 18, 2012

Nine artists and nine mathematicians /scientists have intermingled their ideas to translate the abstract into a luscious viewing excursion, or, as the curators write:

A geometric, algebraic, artistic and cinematographic mosaic that gives everyone a chance to experience fragments of mathematical beauty.

Various disciplines are represented from the math side: “number theory, algebraic geometry, differential geometry, topology, partial differential equations, probability, mathematics applied to biology.” The artists were chosen for their ability to “listen,” and “great sense of curiosity and wonder.”

Here’s an interview with artist Hiroshi Sugimoto…

…and mathematician Silke Zagier
